Parmesan the Reluctant Racehorse, by Jacqui Halpin and John Phillips

Picture
Published by Little Pink Dog Books
Parmesan, the racehorse, thinks he’s a dog. Instead of training with other horses, he’s off with his doggy friends, playing doggy games. Will he be ready to run like a racehorse in the Spring Carnival? A humorous light-hearted tale that celebrates the joy of being yourself and running your own race.

About the Author: Jacqui Halpin
Jacqui’s passion for children’s literature started when reading bedtime stories to her children. They outgrew their childhood books but Jacqui never did. Jacqui writes junior fiction, picture books, and short stories (for adults and children). Her short stories appear in anthologies by Stringybark Publishing and Creative Kids Tales.
She has also co-written her father’s memoir, A Long Way from Misery, as she believes it’s important to record the tales of Australia’s older generations before they are lost. And because he had a story worth telling!
Jacqui is a Brisbane SCBWI author and founding member of Write Links, an active group of emerging children’s writers and illustrators, where she manages the Junior Fiction Critique Group.
While writing and editing Jacqui loves to sip tea from fine china and eat copious amounts of chocolate. She also has a love of bookshops, and should never be allowed to enter the children’s book section with a credit card in her possession.
Please have a look at her Website and Facebook pages.

About the Illustrator: John Phillips

John Phillips was born and raised on a dairy farm in Gippsland, Victoria. A self taught artist and musician, he has been creative all his life. Infatuated with Disney’s hand drawn animation as a boy (and still is to this day) he began working as an apprentice Signwriter at the tender age of Fifteen. (About as creative as you could get in rural Victoria at that time!). In his 20’s John began drawing characters for the Greeting Card market and submitting them. His skills soon caught the eye of a national company and he was employed full time for many years, producing everything from cartoons, children’s birthday cards, sympathy card scenes right through to calligraphy and advertising material. It was during this time that John also began landscape painting with some success. The artists first love though is illustrating. “I do have a rather weird sense of humour,” he says, “and I love to capture all sorts of animals in outlandish, goofy situations.” (Who says Horses can’t fall about laughing or a Rhinoceros can’t wear glasses!?)
John is very pleased to be ‘on board’ for Little Pink Dog Books first production.

A percentage of the income from the sale of this picture book will be donated to the NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust, which re-trains and re-homes retired racehorses, providing them with a new life after racing.
