Princess Hayley loved to read all about space, and especially loved to learn about comets. Some of the interesting things she learned were:
1. Comets are leftovers from the creation of our solar system about 4.5 billion years ago – they consist of sand, ice and carbon dioxide.
2. Halley’s comet is possibly the most famous comet that humans know (and the name sounds a bit like Princess Hayley, too!). Every 75 or so years, you can see it from Earth. It last came near Earth in 1986 and it’s expected to return in 2061.
3. As of July 2019, there were about 6,619 known comets. And we keep finding more!
4. “Comet” comes from the Latin “cometes”. That word comes from the Greek word “kometes” which means “long-haired (star)”. They thought the long tail of the comet, that Princess Hayley slips right back on as she rides the comet, resembled long hair streaming out behind as it flew through space.
